Serratolamna serrata (Agassiz) (Pisces, Neoselachii) from the Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) of Jamaica

چکیده
Three teeth of the shark Serratolamna serrata (Agassiz) from the Guinea Corn Formation (Central Inlier) represent the first recorded occurrence of fossil sharks from Cretaceous rocks of Jamaica. This occurrence increases the known palaeogeographical distribution of S. serrata, which appears to have been global. This species is largely known from the Upper Maastrichtian, which helps confirm the stratigraphic position of the Guinea Corn Formation.

Morphology, Microstructure and Stratigraphy of Some Late Cretaceous Radiolitid Rudists from Jamaica
Radiolitid rudists belonging to the genera Bournonia FISCHER, Biradiolites D’ORBIGNY and Thyrastylon CHUBB are abundant in the Upper Maastrichtian, Titanosarcolites Limestones (Guinea Corn Formation and other formations) of Jamaica. Although there is a large literature on these Jamaican forms (e.g., WHITFIELD, 1897; TRECHMANN, 1924; CHUBB, 1956, 1967, 1971), little information on their microstr...
متن کاملUpper Cretaceous planktic foraminiferal from the Zagros basin (north-northwest Shiraz), Iran
The litho-and biostratigraphy of Upper Cretaceous (Gurpi Formation) has been investigated within a well-exposed section at the northern limb of Pey zard anticline, Abnow area, Southern Iran. The studied section consists mainly of grey marl, calcareous pyritic shale, and argillaceous limestones. The Formation unconformably overlies Sarvak Formation and the Tarbur Formation overlies it unconforma...
متن کاملMorphological and systematic interpretation of some Late Cretaceous (Turonian-Santonian) irregular echinoids, Kopet-Dagh Basin, NE Iran
Abderaz Formation is one of the Upper Cretaceous formations in the Kopet-Dagh sedimentary basin. A stratigraphic section from the mentioned formation is selected for detailed systematic description with regard to echinoids. Numerous well preserved representatives of the families Mircrasteridae wright, 1857 and Echinocorythidae Lambert, 1920 are described from the Ghaleh-Zoo stratigraphic sectio...
متن کاملLate Maastrichtian pterosaurs from North Africa and mass extinction of Pterosauria at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary
Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight and the largest animals to ever take wing. The pterosaurs persisted for over 150 million years before disappearing at the end of the Cretaceous, but the patterns of and processes driving their extinction remain unclear. Only a single family, Azhdarchidae, is definitively known from the late Maastrichtian, suggesting a gradual declin...
متن کاملLate Maastrichtian benthic foraminiferal response to palaeoenvironmental changes: a case study from the AbTalkh Formation, west of Kopeh-Dagh Basin, Iran
Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Maastrichtian strata, Gansserina gansseri-Abathamphalus mayaroensis Planktonic Foraminiferal Zone, of the AbTalkh Formation at Aitamir section (west of the Kopeh-Dagh basin) were investigated in order to evaluate the palaeoenvironmental changes (organic matter flux and bottom-water oxygenation). Maastrichtian faunal assemblages are well preserved and diver...
